CAHON Connect May 2026 Newsletter
Message from the President and Chair of Board
Dear CAHON Members, Colleagues, and Friends,
As we continue an exciting and productive year for CAHON, we would like to thank all of you for your continued engagement, support, and commitment to our community.
Over the past several months, CAHON has continued to expand its educational programs, mentorship initiatives, professional networking opportunities, and membership engagement across our growing community. From our highly successful Community Oncology Forum and Post-ASH Virtual Update to our Career Pathways and Fellowship Application webinars, we have seen strong participation across trainees, junior faculty, community oncologists, researchers, and industry colleagues. In particular, the newly launched CAHON Quarterly Seminar Series has become an important platform for mentorship, academic exchange, and professional development by bringing together senior faculty, junior faculty, and fellows in a collaborative learning environment. These activities reflect the strength, diversity, and growing impact of our network.
One of the most encouraging developments this year has been the extraordinary level of member engagement. We received a record number of volunteers for the 2026–2028 Executive Team, highlighting the enthusiasm and dedication within our community to help shape CAHON’s future. Our committees continue to drive impactful programming in academic development, clinical practice, clinical research, mentorship, wellness, education, and public outreach.
We are also proud to celebrate the accomplishments of our members, whose contributions continue to elevate the visibility and impact of Chinese American physicians and scientists in hematology, oncology, and cancer research. Whether through major national awards, leadership appointments, groundbreaking research publications, or clinical innovation, CAHON members are making meaningful contributions across academia, industry, and patient care.
At the same time, we remain deeply committed to fostering a supportive and collaborative professional community. The recent physician wellness survey conducted through the Community Oncology Forum highlighted both the challenges many oncologists face and the strong interest in greater peer connection, mentorship, wellness programming, and practical strategies to support physician well-being. In response to this feedback, CAHON plans to launch a dedicated Wellness Committee beginning with the new term in June 2026. We hope this initiative will help further promote professional sustainability, community support, and physician wellness across all career stages.
Looking ahead, we are excited for several upcoming events, including the Summer Symposium and Reception during ASCO, the New York Oncology Forum, the inaugural Fall Symposium during the SITC Annual Meeting, and our Winter Symposium and Reception. We hope these gatherings will continue to strengthen collaboration, mentorship, friendship, and community across CAHON.
Finally, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to our board members, executive committee members, volunteers, corporate partners, and all CAHON members for your dedication and generosity. CAHON’s continued growth and success are only possible because of your efforts and shared vision.
Together, we are building a stronger and more connected community dedicated to advancing hematology, oncology, research, mentorship, and patient care.
With gratitude and best wishes,
Liang Deng, MD, PhD

CAHON Community Oncology Forum, February 2026, Physician Wellness Survey - Executive Summary | Jane Liu
Background:
Recent surveys report burnout rates approaching 59% among oncologists, up from 45% a decade earlier.
Findings:
A 7-question wellness survey of 40 CAHON physicians assessed burnout, work–life balance, and lifestyle habits. Results indicate that burnout is common: only 15% reported never feeling emotionally exhausted, while nearly 40% experience burnout weekly or more often. Clinical responsibilities also affect personal life for many respondents, with over 75% reporting some negative impact on family or personal time.
Lifestyle patterns suggest opportunities for improvement. Most respondents sleep 6–7 hours per night, slightly below optimal levels (7-9 hours) for adults per NCCN guideline and national sleep foundation (26-64 years old). While 60% report exercising at least three times per week, a significant portion report less frequent physical activity. Nutrition is also affected by work demands, with about three-quarters reporting occasional or frequent skipped meals or inadequate nutrition.
Use of formal stress-management strategies remains limited: half of respondents rarely or never use practices such as mindfulness, breathing exercises, or stretching.
Open-ended responses highlighted several areas where CAHON could support member well-being, including peer connection, networking opportunities, wellness and stress-management programs, physical activity initiatives, and community-building activities.
Overall, the findings suggest that CAHON physician stress and work–life challenges are common, while members express strong interest in wellness initiatives and practical strategies to support physician well-being.

The article, "ZFP148 is a transcriptional repressor of cytolytic effector CD8+ T cell differentiation," focuses on, "progenitor CD8+ T cells differentiating into effector and exhausted progenies during chronic antigen stimulation. However, mechanisms that restrain exhaustion and sustain effector differentiation remain incompletely defined." They identify and analyze these occurrences in the article, as well as comparing the results with other infections and diseases, such as cancer.
