September 2025

Message from the President and Chair of Board

Dear CAHON Members, Colleagues, and Friends,

As we move into the second half of 2025, we are proud to reflect on how far CAHON has come together as a community. The past few months have been filled with milestones that speak to our mission of advancing hematology and oncology while building lasting connections among Chinese American physicians, scientists, and trainees.

We celebrated the election of our incoming President-Elect, Dr. Cynthia Ma, who will bring her leadership and vision to the 2026–2028 term. We also had the privilege of honoring Dr. Robert S. Negrin with the 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award and recognizing Drs. Hongtao Liu and Yi Feng with the Outstanding Service Award for their tireless dedication to CAHON. We extend our gratitude to Dr. Yuxia Jia for her years of board service, and warmly welcome Dr. Delong Liu as a new member of the CAHON Board of Directors.

Our committees continue to drive CAHON’s growth: from mentorship initiatives and career development opportunities, to clinical research collaborations and event planning. This year alone, we have welcomed more than fifty new members, hosted impactful symposia and virtual updates, and laid the foundation for our upcoming 20th Anniversary Gala at the New York Oncology Forum this October. These achievements remind us that CAHON is more than an organization—it is a family that thrives on shared purpose and collective action.

Looking ahead, we are excited to continue expanding mentorship opportunities, strengthening our presence in community oncology, and building new partnerships. Together, we will ensure that CAHON remains a vibrant platform where innovation, collaboration, and leadership flourish.

Together, we are CAHON. Together, we make a difference.

With gratitude and optimism,

Liang Deng, MD, PhD, CAHON President and Jing-Zhou Hou, MD, PhD, CAHON Board Chair

Member Highlights

Erxi Wu, PhD

Dr. Erxi Wu, a lifetime CAHON member, recently published two impactful papers on lung cancer.

In Bioactive Materials, Dr. Wu and collaborators reported that a novel compound, ethyl 6-chlorocoumarin-3-carboxylyl L-theanine (TClC), effectively suppresses NSCLC growth, including cancer stem cell populations, and inhibits metastasis through a polypharmacological mechanism. They identified EZH2, NF-κB, AKT, β-catenin, and PD-L1 as key functional binding targets of TClC. These findings position TClC as a promising therapeutic candidate for NSCLC, introducing a new paradigm in cancer therapy by simultaneously targeting multiple critical oncogenic pathways.

In Cellular and Molecular Biology Letters, Dr. Wu and collaborators uncovered that lung circulating tumor cell clusters with stem-like properties resist chemotherapy through an activated CDH17-YAP pathway. They also demonstrated that cisplatin is more effective against rapidly proliferating tumors, highlighting a critical link between tumor growth and chemoresponsiveness. These findings provide new insights into lung cancer chemoresistance mechanisms and suggest that targeting the CDH17-YAP axis may enhance treatment efficacy, particularly in chemoresistant CTC populations.
