CAHON Connect September 2026 Newsletter
Message from the President and Chair of Board
Dear CAHON Members and Friends,
We are delighted to welcome you to the September 2026 issue of CAHON Connect. As we begin the 2026–2028 leadership term, we are inspired by the energy, engagement, and sense of community across CAHON.
This issue reflects many of the qualities that make CAHON special. We celebrate the extraordinary achievements and service of our members and friends, including our 2026 Lifetime Achievement and Outstanding Service Award recipients. We also recognize the accomplishments of our members, welcome new colleagues to the CAHON community, and highlight the important work underway across our committees.
We are also pleased to introduce two new newsletter features. Member Spotlight, led by the Public Relations Committee, will help us get to know the people behind CAHON, their professional journeys, contributions, and perspectives, and strengthen connections across our community. New FDA Approvals, developed by the Clinical Research Committee, will provide timely updates on important regulatory developments and emerging therapies that may influence oncology practice and patient care. Together, these additions reflect our commitment to making CAHON Connect both a stronger community forum and a valuable professional resource.
Looking ahead, one of our highest priorities is to continue creating opportunities for scientific exchange, professional development, mentorship, and collaboration. From our educational programs and New York Oncology Forum to our Young Investigator and Junior Investigator Awards and the new NextGen Summit, we remain committed to supporting the next generation of physicians, scientists, and leaders in hematology and oncology.
None of this would be possible without the dedication of our committee chairs and members, volunteers, our dedicated administrative leadership and staff, partners, and the many individuals who generously contribute their time and expertise to CAHON. We thank each of you for helping us build an increasingly vibrant, inclusive, and impactful professional community.
We look forward to working together during the coming term and to seeing many of you at our upcoming programs and events.
With warm regards,

Member Spotlight

Liang Deng, MD, PhD
Associate Attending Physician and Associate Member
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
1. Tell us briefly about your professional journey and what you focus on today.
I am a physician-scientist and dermatologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, with a research program at The Rockefeller University. My clinical and research interests have always intersected around cancer, immunology, and viral infections. I care for patients with melanoma and virus-associated cancers, including Kaposi sarcoma and Merkel cell carcinoma, while my laboratory work focuses on developing virus-based cancer immunotherapies and understanding how innate immunity can be harnessed against cancer and infections. What continues to excite me is the opportunity to connect discoveries in the laboratory with meaningful advances for patients.
2. What brought you to CAHON, and what has kept you deeply involved over the years?
I was introduced to CAHON by Wenru Song, Ke Liu, and Jianda Yuan at a cancer immunology conference we were all attending. I became involved because I saw the value of bringing together Chinese American physicians and scientists working in hematology and oncology. But over time, CAHON became much more than a professional organization to me. It became a family.
Over the years I was invited to speak at the New York Oncology Forum and the China Cancer Immunotherapy Workshop several times, and later served as chair of the Career Development Committee before being elected President for the 2024–2026 term. What has kept me involved through all of it is the people. CAHON brings together individuals at different institutions, career stages, and areas of expertise who share a willingness to support one another. I am deeply honored to receive this year’s Outstanding Service Award, though I would say it belongs equally to the committee chairs and members, board members, and volunteers belongs equally to the committee chairs and members, board members, and volunteers who work tirelessly for our organization.
3. What is your vision for the future of CAHON?
I hope CAHON will continue to grow as a professional community with national and global impact, and our most important responsibility is to invest in the next generation. Programs like the Junior Investigator Award and the New York Oncology Forum are where that investment becomes visible, and I would like to see them expand. But mentorship cannot stop at recognition. My hope is that within a few years we see younger members not only presenting at our meetings but chairing our committees and setting the agenda.
I would also like to see CAHON become an even stronger platform for scientific collaboration, education, and professional development. There is extraordinary talent within our community, and there is far more we can accomplish collectively than any of us can individually. Ultimately, I hope we build a CAHON that remains strong and sustainable for generations to come while making meaningful contributions to cancer research, patient care, and our broader community.
4. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
I have three passions outside of medicine and science: tennis, cooking, and music. Tennis keeps me active and competitive and is a wonderful way to clear my mind. Cooking gives me a different kind of satisfaction. I enjoy creating something with my hands and, even more importantly, sharing it with family and friends. Music has always been a source of enjoyment, energy, and reflection for me.
Interestingly, these interests have something in common with science and medicine: they all involve curiosity, practice, creativity, and the opportunity to keep learning and improving.
5. What is bringing you joy or inspiration these days?
Increasingly, I find joy and inspiration in discussing science and medicine with young people. Their curiosity, energy, and willingness to ask questions remind me why I chose this career in the first place.
I still get tremendous excitement from making a scientific discovery or seeing a patient benefit from a new treatment. But I have also discovered a different kind of fulfillment in helping a student, trainee, or young physician-scientist develop an idea, overcome an obstacle, or see possibilities they had not considered before.
That is also one reason I care so deeply about CAHON’s future. Perhaps one of the most meaningful things we can accomplish is to help the next generation go further than we have.

Peter Q. Jiang, MD, PhD
Medical Oncologist and Hematologist
John B. Amos Cancer Center
1. You have been practicing hematology and oncology for more than 20 years. What first drew you to oncology?
Twenty years ago, I chose oncology because I believed, and I still believe, that oncology is the best field in medicine.
What has made the career especially meaningful is the relationship with my patients. I have always tried to treat every patient as I would treat a member of my own family. To be recognized by my patients and colleagues over the years has meant a great deal to me.
After 20 years, I still feel fortunate to do this work.
2. You knew about CAHON as early as fellowship, but your relationship with the organization developed later. What changed?
I knew about CAHON when I was a fellow, but honestly, I did not pay much attention to it in the beginning.
It took me another 10 years to realize: CAHON is a big family for Chinese American oncologists.
That became increasingly important to me. Through CAHON, we have a network of colleagues and friends, opportunities for academic development, and people we can call for advice about difficult patient-care questions. But it is more than a professional network. There is also friendship and personal enrichment.
Over time, I realized that this community was something very special.
3.What does receiving the CAHON Outstanding Service Award mean to you?
I am very honored. Service has always been part of how I think about being a physician.
In my local community, I have supported our annual breast cancer symposium and participated in Cancer Survivors Day and other community activities. Oncology does not end when the patient leaves the clinic. We care for patients, but we also support families, survivors, and the community around them.
The same is true of CAHON. We help each other so that, ultimately, we can take better care of our patients.
4. Many people in CAHON know you as the person behind the camera. How did photography become part of your life?
I like taking photos because I want to preserve the moments of our happiness and our achievements. And if you want better photos, you have to learn how to take better photos. So I learned photography from YouTube.
For me, the photographs are not only about photography. Years later, we can look back and remember the people, the meetings, the trips, and the happy moments we shared together.
5. When you put away the stethoscope, and occasionally the camera, what does Dr. Jiang enjoy outside of medicine?
I enjoy watching almost every sport, although I have realized that watching sports does not count as exercise! So now I am trying to increase my activity level. Like many of my CAHON friends, I have started playing pickleball.
My goal is to become part of the “healthy old generation.”
I am also a longtime fan of playing cards. In fact, when I was in Shanghai, I earned my wife through playing cards!
I would say that was probably my best win.
And I am still a big fan of playing cards today.
